My Fowl Poem June 23, 2009
I’m just a one-legged duck, swimming in circles,
Scaring the fish and dodging the turtles.
I lost my direction some years ago,
And now I am learning to go with the flow.
One of these days, ‘twil lead me ashore,
And I’ll hop my way back, t’where I started before.
Till then I’m perplexed by this transient state
That seems to lead nowhere; maybe it’s fate.

Today’s Outtakes June 6, 2009
Because today was a test (Isn’t it all a test?), I tried my hardest to remember the funny and cute surprises that were sprinkled on the cupcake of my insane day. Here are the highlights:
- Lily was crying because she couldn’t go to a slumber party Sarah was attending. I set her in my lap and hugged and cuddled her for a bit. In the midst of her sobbing, she pulled away from me a little, studied my eyes and said in her tiny, sweet voice, “You have a really pretty eye color.”
- Taylor told me the Tooth Fairy didn’t come for the third night in a row. I told her that since the Tooth Fairy is buying her a training bra today, she’s old enough to know that I’m the Tooth Fairy.
- Sarah, Taylor and Lily watched Shaolin Soccer today, a movie I highly recommend. MoFM, I think you would LOVE it. It ranks up there with Kung Fu Hustle, maybe higher, plus there’s lots of falling and soccer.
- Lily declared she was a Kung Fu Master and proceeded to kick and spin like Taz. Sarah told her she wasn’t a Kung Fu Master, and Lily started to cry.
- Sarah wrote on James’ white board that hangs in his gym, “Daddy please teach me goong foo.”
That’s what I got for ya. Oh yeah, I hope they find the psycho who killed David Carradine.
Canta Fuerte June 4, 2009
Here’s some trivia for Cary of LoTD, who just completed a trivia book: Carol Hall, who wrote songs for the children’s album “Free to Be… You and Me,” also wrote songs for the soundtrack to “The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas”.
Remember the “Sing the Hit Songs of Sesame Street” album? It had “Bein’ Green,” “Rubber Duckie,” and “C is for Cookie”. My favoritest song is on that album, and Lily and I sing it to Ava every night (with some spanish lyrics thrown in for extra flavor).
Lots of people seem to have had a bummer of a day yesterday so I’d like to share it with everyone. Sing it. It will lift your spirits for sure. :)

Sing a song
Sing out loud
Sing out strong
Sing of good things, not bad
Sing of happy, not sad
Sing
Sing a song
Make it simple
To last your whole life long
Don’t worry that it’s not good enough
For anyone else to hear

Jelly Biting Fever and a Haircut, 6 Bits! May 30, 2009

Yesterday, Lily asked me if she could cut her hair if it were down to her knees. I said, “Sure.” I should have been more specific. I imagine she bent over and cut whatever hair was touching her knees. Nice mullet, Lily.
I have posted about all of my girls except sweet, angelic Sarah. She is camera shy and generally embarrasses easily, so I have had to exercise a LOT of restraint in not posting about her. As sweet and well-intentioned as Sarah is, she is just like her father. Trouble finds her. And I’m trouble.
Last night we went to Fiesta (a grocery store that caters to Latinos) where we planned to eat tamales for dinner and shop for produce. Plus, how could I resist this?
A Mother’s Day Present to Share with the Kids May 9, 2009
The girls and I were watching one of our videos on You Tube this evening. Okay, Sarah, Lily and I were watching it. Taylor’s at her bio-Dad’s. Ava was doing this:

Front to back, Ava.
Which was a nice break from doing this:

You totally lost that round of Wii Tennis. In your face, Ava!
Anyway, we took a gamble and clicked on a suggested video from another poster. We discovered this gem. It’s a little slow in the beginning but a sweet video to share with kids. (warning: There is a minor National GeoGRAPHIC moment, but my kids seemed pretty unshaken by it.)
HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY!!!
The Little Rascal May 8, 2009
Today Lily was sitting on the arm of the couch, dangling her feet off the edge. As her grubby heels beat carelessly against the couch, she proclaimed, “I’m going baby fishing!”
I asked her if she had a really big hook.
She gave a smirky nod that could not disguise the giggle in her twinkling eyes. I looked at her hands. They were clutching a white ribbon, which was draped over the arm of the couch.
I followed the white ribbon that had beautifully embellished one of Sarah’s birthday presents (Aunt Jennie’s homemade brownies). My eyes trailed past Lily’s slightly brown and mud-smudged legs, over the edge of the tattered tapestry sofa that had belonged to my late grandmother (and has since become the cat’s scratching post), and there I discovered the baby fish. Or rather fish baby.
Tied to the other end of the ribbon, as if in a noose, was a wide-eyed, psychotically expressionless and unclothed baby doll, bouncing stiffly as Lily (still holding her fishing line) began to wiggle with delight at her creativity.
The little rascal was gone fishing for sure.

Funniest Fashion Show EVAR! April 25, 2009
Why is this funny? Wardrobe, Lily, and the credits (the girls told me what to type).
